When Sasuke first met Naruto at the Academy, they were matched to compete against each other. Naruto was excited at the opportunity to defeat Sasuke and become popular like Sasuke, but he is easily beaten. By looking at Sasuke's eyes, Naruto realized that there is so much hatred that he was looking at Naruto. When Iruka told them to make peace penerai, both of them refused.
